Where did the name Hunters’ Gate Capital originate?

Living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan we are continually in awe of the beauty and grandeur of Central Park. The park is one of the greatest assets for those who live in Manhattan where one can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy nature.  It is truly a marvel of city planning and the greatest work of the landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.  The flora and fauna change with the seasons creating an ever-changing palette of colors and shapes.

A stone wall surrounds the park and many (but not all) of the entrances were given names.  The Park Commissioners honored professions and groups that helped make New York City a great metropolis.

The commissioners suggested a naming system at the Park’s four entrances along 59th Street, incorporating four main occupations: Scholars’ Gate (at Fifth Avenue), Artists’ Gate (at Sixth Avenue), Artisans’ Gate (at Seventh Avenue) and Merchants’ Gate (at Eighth Avenue). Nine of the other 18 gates honor professions that played a prominent role in New York City’s history: Pioneers, Farmers, Hunters, Miners, Woodsmen, Mariners, Engineers, Inventors, and Warriors.

The other gates single out significant members of the population: Women (at West 72nd Street), Boys (at West 100th Street), Girls (at East 102nd Street), and most importantly, Strangers’ Gate, at West 106th Street, for the prominent role immigrants have played in New York City’s development.  In 2022, for the first time since 1862, the Gate of the Exonerated was named on 110th street.

We spent many weekends during the peak of the COVID pandemic riding our bikes through the park and clearing our heads.  We came up with the idea of adopting the name of one of the entrances and Hunters’ Gate, an entrance on the West side, was a natural fit.
